Imagine Weston Fourth Grade has chosen to use the Wordly Wise program of vocabulary instruction. We like it because it teaches our students that there are multiple meanings for many words. The program encourages them to learn all the word meanings and use apply/recognize the different meanings in sentences. The program provides activities to assist students in learning the word meanings.

Wordly Wise Activities
Completed at home:
Monday In the first exercise"a: Finding Meanings", students draw on their knowledge of the words’ definitions to form sentences. The repeated use of words through this exercise and the ones that follow helps students build a full and flexible understanding of the vocabulary words.
In addition, using the WW Quizlet website. a student should make and study flash cards, (they must make a card for each word which should contain all meanings.) They should also complete activity from the Wordly Wise Quizlet website.

Completed In Class:
Monday In the second exercise, Just the Right Word, phrases expressing the meanings of vocabulary words are highlighted in sentences; students replace them with the correct word from the word list.
Tuesday In Applying Meanings, the third exercise, students answer questions that use the vocabulary words in a specific context. To select the correct answer, students need to use their full knowledge of each word’s meaning.
Wednesday The fourth exercise provides more sophisticated Word Study. In this activity students may identify synonyms and antonyms, explore how prefixes and suffixes change word meanings, learn about Latin word roots, or distinguish between homophones.
