Florida Native Floridians Class Project

​

ESTABLISH
As a group, your task is to research the Florida Native American tribe that you have been assigned and present the information in a group book.

The five tribes that we will be learning about are the Apalachee, Tequesta, Tocobaga, Timucua, and Calusa. 

The four jobs in each group are Shelter Specialist,Nutritionist, Technology Specialist, and Clothier.

ENGAGE
I. Research 
When researching your Florida Native American tribe, try to find out the following information. Use resources given out in class as well as the resources listed on our class website. 

 

 

Each group will work to answer the following questions:

 

 

Shelter Specialist:
1. What types of homes did your group live in?

 

Clothier:
2. How did your group dress?

 

Nutritionist:
  3. How did your group survive in the environment? (What did they eat? Did they hunt? Farm?)

 

Technology Specialist

4. What tools did they use to survive (food preparation/hunting)

All:
6. Where was your tribe located in Florida?

7. What kinds of festivals, ceremonies, and games did your group participate in?



II. Book Project
Each group will create ONE book. Your book must contain the following pages and elements: 

a. Title Page (all) : The title page must contain your tribe’s name, an illustration, and the names of your group members.
b. Map (all): Draw a map of Florida and label the region where your tribe was located.
c. Homes & Villages (Shelter Specialist): This page must answer question number one. Include an illustration or picture of the types of homes that your tribe lived in.
d. Clothing (Clothier): This page must answer question number two. Include an illustration or picture of the types of clothing worn by your tribe. 
e. Food(Nutritionist): This page must answer question number three. Include an illustration or picture of the types of food that your tribe ate. 
f. Technology (Technology Specialist): This page must answer question number four and can include items like weapons, cooking tools, other tools). Include an illustration or picture of the different ways that your tribe used the items around them to make their life more successful.


Each page is worth 10 points an should contain either 2-3 well written paragraphs or detailed  bullet points.  10 Points will be allocated to creativity.  10 points to gramar and spelling.The whole book is worth 80 points. Each student will get an individual score /10 for their page an a group score /80.

III. Oral Presentation 
Your group will be required to present your research in an oral presentation, where your presentation will be displayed and explained. Your whole presentation must be between 3-5 minutes long. It is suggested that you practice and time your oral presentation before presenting. 

EVALUATE
IV. Grading 
This class project will be worth several Social Studies grades. 
a. Individual Participation Grade: This grade will be based upon your participation and engagement in the group project as well as your individual contributions to the group. 
b. Presentation Group Grade: Each group will be graded based on how each group member worked together and contributed to the overall product. 
c. Project Grade: Each group’s project will be graded on each of the elements explained above. You will also be graded on the cover, spelling, grammar (punctuation, capitalization, etc.), neatness, creativity, and content.
